Gianmarino Gianfrate
Trauma and Critical Care Fellow at Louisiana State University
Gianmarino Gianfrate is a Trauma and Critical Care Fellow at Louisiana State University (LSU) Health Sciences Center in New Orleans. His professional background includes trauma surgery, surgical critical care, and advanced resuscitation. In October 2025, he passed his general surgery boards and became a board-certified general surgeon. He is scheduled to sit for his critical care boards in September 2026. He is also an active member of the American College of Surgeons, Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma, and Chest Wall Injury Society.
Appointments
In addition to caring for trauma patients, Dr. Gianfrate is heavily involved in trauma education, physician development, and clinical quality improvement. He serves as an educator and instructor through Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS), Advanced Surgical Skills for Exposure in Trauma (ASSET), Rural Trauma Team Development (RTTD), Stop the Bleed, and multicenter pREBOA (Partial Resuscitative Endovascular Balloon Occlusion of the Aorta) educational initiatives. As Course Director for both ATLS and ASSET, he leads training programs that teach physicians and healthcare providers trauma evaluation, resuscitation principles, and operative trauma management. He also participates in the Advanced Resuscitation Fellows Educational Series, a nationally connected fellowship cohort dedicated to resuscitation science, innovation, simulation-based learning, and leadership development.
Gianmarino serves as an invited educator for the EARLi multicenter collaborative, where he instructs residents, fellows, and multidisciplinary healthcare teams in pREBOA utilization and advanced resuscitation strategies. He has also contributed to the development of educational resources used across participating institutions and has delivered presentations at several academic centers and conferences. In addition, he was invited to speak at the Safety, Healthcare Quality, and Improving Patient Outcomes (SHIP) Conference, where he presented institutional venous thromboembolism (VTE) data and updates to system-wide practice guidelines before a multidisciplinary audience.
Before beginning his fellowship, he served as a Clinical Instructor of Surgery at Northeast Ohio Medical University (NEOMED). In this role, he taught both medical students and surgical residents in clinical and operative settings.
Gianfrate has held leadership responsibilities in research, accreditation, physician wellness, and graduate medical education. He has also served on hospital committees related to research, wellness, graduate medical education, and clinical learning environments. Through these positions, he supported quality improvement efforts, research oversight, resident education, accreditation activities, and programs to enhance physician well-being and professional development.
Awards & Honors
Among the honors Gianmarino has received is the Dr. Rashid Abdu “My Surgeon” Award. This recognition reflects patients' trust and appreciation. It acknowledges not only technical surgical skill but also compassion, communication, and the ability to make a meaningful difference in patient care.
He also received the Surgical Research Resident Award from Mercy Health St. Elizabeth in Youngstown, Ohio, for three consecutive years in 2023, 2024, and 2025. This annual distinction is awarded to a resident who demonstrates dedication to surgical research and training. It recognizes significant contributions to advancing surgical knowledge through innovation, research, and scientific inquiry.
Gianfrate's work in clinical research, surgical education, and critical care has received additional recognition. In 2025, he earned Second Place in Oral Research Presentation at the Vincent Vanek Regional Research Day at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for presenting "Downgrading BIG 3: The Effects of Anticoagulation in a Patient with Traumatic Brain Injury and Concurrent Thromboelastography (TEG)."
His commitment to professional growth and the advancement of surgical care was further recognized with the Society of Thoracic Surgeons' Looking to the Future Scholarship Award in 2023. In 2022, he received the Surgical Critical Care Resident Award from Mercy Health St. Elizabeth Youngstown for his accomplishments in critical care training and patient care.
Earlier in his career, Gianmarino Gianfrate, MD, received the Glimmer of Hope Grant from the Donnenberg Lab at the Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh. The grant supported his research activities and scientific contributions.
Research
Dr. Gianfrate's research interests include trauma surgery, trauma resuscitation, traumatic brain injury, critical care, hemorrhage management, and surgical outcomes. He has authored and co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications on subjects including validation of brain injury treatment guidelines, gastrointestinal bleeding in critically ill patients, advanced cardiovascular procedures, infectious disease outcomes, and cancer biology. His work has been published in journals such as Cureus Medical Science Journal, Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery, Journal of Leukocyte Biology, and Cancer Gene Therapy. These publications highlight a commitment to advancing evidence-based care in trauma, critical care, and surgery.
Education
Gianfrate completed his General Surgery Residency at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital in Ohio from 2020 to 2025. During that period, he assumed a variety of leadership, educational, and research responsibilities while mentoring medical students and residents.
He graduated Summa Cum Laude from Touro College of Osteopathic Medicine in New York and also earned a Master’s Degree in Interdisciplinary Science with the same distinction. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh, where he majored in Biology and minored in Chemistry.
On the Personal Side
Gianmarino is a first-generation Italian-American and a former collegiate lacrosse captain at the University of Pittsburgh. He has a strong interest in leadership, mentorship, and surgical education. Outside of medicine, he enjoys cooking, winemaking, and sharing his culinary interests through a food-focused Instagram account.
His hobbies have led to recognition, including a Blue Ribbon award at the Syracuse Pepper Festival and finalist honors in amateur winemaking at the Canfield Fair.
He enjoys spending time with his wife and their two dogs. During his general surgery residency, he and his wife volunteered at Our Community Kitchen and the Animal Charity Humane Society in Youngstown, Ohio.
Through his dedication to patient care, education, research, and service, Gianmarino Gianfrate continues to contribute to the fields of trauma surgery, critical care, and physician education.
